The F-150 has been making waves ever since it first made its debut more than a couple of decades ago. It’s come a long way, indeed, and it’s proven its mettle more than just a few times. It’s also no stranger to awards and accolades, too, having been no less than the best-selling pickup since all the way back to 1977. In 1981, it was also dubbed as the best-selling vehicle all across the United States.
Needless to say, this latest iteration of the F-150 has got some serious shoes to fill. Then again, no one else is more fitting for the job than the Ford designers.
Lightweight Big Truck
The 2016 Ford F-150 is lightweight, literally. It’s a bold, risky move to take, but it’s one that seems to be paying off for the manufacturers. This 2016 model is now comprised of glued and riveted aluminum panels for its bed and body. Supporting these lightweight materials is a high-strength steel ladder frame, thereby reassuring stability and durability. The use of space is impressive, too, with the new F-150 providing several options of 5×6, 6×6, and 8ft beds.
No doubt about it, the F-150 looks good. The question now is, does it perform as well as it looks? Based on the specs of the engines (yes, they are offering more than just one option), the answer seems to be a resounding yes.
At the base level, the F-150 will run on a 3.5-liter V-6 with 282 horsepower and towing capacity of as much as 7,600 pounds. Meanwhile, the 2.7-liter turbo V-6 option carries as much as 325 horsepower and 375 pound-feet of torque, able to two as much as 8,500 pounds.
Meanwhile, the two other top trim levels will be sporting the 5.0-liter V8 engine, upping the horsepower to 385, and the top of the line twin-turbo 3.5-liter V6 at 265 hp.
